米其林2019创新合作挑战赛 Michelin 2019 Open Innovation Challenge

本次挑战赛分别有面向C端客户以及B端客户的挑战。针对C端客户,米其林每年除了不断拓展分销网络,扩大线下和线上的销售点。同时,也会推出针对中国消费者提供定制化的创新产品与服务解决方案,以提供更好的出行体验。针对B端客户,目前为超过五个领域提供专业轮胎,米其林将进一步以轮胎为基础的全方位汽车管理产品及解决方案,颠覆行业商业模式,持续引领中国市场。

A continuous, long-term market understanding, along with the rapid development of China's economy and the automotive industry has led to a sharp growth of Michelin's market performance in China. Michelin is a highly awarded tyre brand, making it a market leader with strong market influence. In order to boost its business functions and engage in open innovation with external startups, we invite your team to join the Michelin Open Innovation Program. Through the program, you will co-develop a POC/pilot with Michelin. 

In this program, there are both B2C and B2B focuses. In the B2C segment, Michelin looks to increase For B2B clients,  Michelin provides professional tyre services in more than 5 industries. It wants to provide a more comprehensive automobile management solution with the aid of technology, hence disrupting the traditional business model and securing its leading position in China. their distribution networks and their customer touchpoints, both online and offline.  Simultaneously, they would like to develop customized products/services for their chinese customers in order to enhance the customer experience.

Due to much traffic congestion present in big cities, people spend a large amount of time on the road. Furthermore, long driving hours leads to a mundane experience on the road, causing drivers to feel bored, annoyed or unproductive.

Therefore, Michelin and XNode are looking for Chinese startups to co-create new customer experiences around in-vehicle mobility. These include, but are not limited to, access to financial, social, health content or any form of entertainment. Ultimately, we hope to improve the utilization of driving time for consumers, thus increasing Michelin's brand awareness and customer stickiness.

Every car needs to be maintained from time to time. However, in the Chinese landscape today, car maintenance is not always done with full transparency. In the car maintenance process, customers are not always able to fully acquire transparent information  e.g.  price comparison, maintenance diagnosis and information of the maintenance process. This has created trust issues for consumers in the car maintenance sector. 

How can we then improve the degree of transparency for these customers, hence improving customer satisfaction by saving time and maximizing their value? We are looking for Chinese startups to co-develop innovative solutions to help to improve customer satisfaction, trust and transparency.

China's economy has resulted in a new normal, which has changed the competitive landscape in the after-sales segment of the automotive industry. The players are increasingly focusing on the lifetime value of their existing customers by enhancing their “retargeting” and "repurchase”approaches. Consumers do not purchase tyres frequently (a typical interval is 2-4 years) and car maintenance takes place only a couple times a year. As a result, Michelin's customer brand loyalty has declined.

Could we increase the lifetime value for our customers, and hence our brand loyalty? To tackle this question, we are looking for Chinese startups to co-develop innovative solutions that can entice customers to re-purchase tyres for a 2nd, 3rd and 4th time.


我们如何基于“按使用量付费”的商业模式,为米其林引入新产品或服务,从而提高卡车客户的资产利用率?

米其林和XNode正在寻找中国初创企业共同开发创新解决方案,以期提升卡车客户的总资产利用率,从根本上颠覆按产品付费的商业模式,实现按使用量付费的商业模式。能够帮没有充分利用自身资产的卡车客户提高总资产利用率,意味着成本会显著减低,这将会是一个巨大的市场机会。

How can we introduce a new product or service offering using a ‘Pay per Usage’ business model in order to improve the asset utilization rate in our truck customer market?

We are looking for Chinese startups to co-develop innovative solutions to improve the total asset utilization rate of truck customers with the aim of fundamentally disrupting the business model from a 'pay per product' to a 'pay per usage' business model. This will result in significant cost savings for our truck customers who are not currently fully utilising their assets, thus presenting a huge market opportunity for Michelin.

Can we develop innovative solutions to improve the way EV Fleets are managed in China (for buses, truck and cars)?

There is a rising trend in the Electical Vehicle (EV) market, but the sudden surge in EV vehicles on the road has made it increasingly hard to manage the EV fleet effectively. Current issues include: how to locate the cars in the fleet, how to extent the life expectancy of EV cars, how to manage the car temperature and energy consumption etc. By collecting and analyzing EV fleet data, sophisticated EV management systems can be developed.

How can we help OEMs prove, to end consumers, their ability to pass on cost savings (in maintenance / fuel / battery) due to the quality of Michelin's tyres?

We are looking for Chinese startups to co-develop innovative solutions which can demonstrate cost savings brought about by superior tire quality. Michelin's tyres may be in a higher end price category compared to local competitors, but with their superior quality which ensures long-lasting performance, our consumers can enjoy long term cost savings.

What we lack are solutions to demonstrate these added values, and avoid the sole focus of our customers on the high initial costs. These solutions could include measuring correlations between driving behaviour and maintenance, developing new interfaces to monitor the performance of various car/trucks components in real-time or any other solutions to display real-time data of tyre performance vs cost.
